History:

The I.U.O.E. was founded on December 7, 1896 - when 11 Power Engineers met in Chicago, Illinois to form the "National Union of Steam Engineers" then, in Toronto, Ontario in 1897, these men met with Canadian members of the Steam and Hoisting Engineers Union" to agree upon a merger of the two Nationalistic groups to form the" International Union of Steam Engineers of America" This was later changed to " International Union of Operating Engineers" as it is known today. This membership exceeds 379,000.

Jurisdiction:

The I.U.O.E. is recognized by the C.L.C. in Canada, the B.C.F.L. in British Columbia, and by the AFL - CIO in North America as having appropriate jurisdiction within our established bargaining areas of Canada.

Region 11 of the I.U.O.E. is composed of all Locals within Canada's borders.

LOCAL 882 and charter locals B & H have been established within the geographical area of British Columbia through legally recognized Collective Agreements and Certifications awarded by the Labour Relations Board of British Columbia.


Chartered Locals:

Local 882 is composed primarily of Power Engineers certificated under provisions of the Power Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act and regulations and trades people are certificated under the Apprenticeship Act & Regulations.

Local 882B is comprised of qualified and competent members who work in various occupations other than engineering, such as - school districts, municipal office, office buildings, recreational facilities, transportation companies, chemical plants, etc.

Local 882H is a Health Charter with the majority being dedicated and skilled members working in Long Term Care Facilities, comprised of - Nurses Aides, Dietary, Office, Custodial and Maintenance employees.

Member Units

Our Local Union's territory covers all of British Columbia, which means our members work in places from Fort St. John to Victoria and from Nelson to Prince Rupert. You can well imagine that our Business Manager and Agents have quite a task servicing all our Member Units.

We are very fortunate to have dedicated and well trained Shop Stewards who are willing to work hard for the members and the Local Union.

Government of Local 882:

Local 882, 882B and 882H are governed by normal union principles of democracy. The Elected Executive Board serve for a period of 4 years and are then subject to re-election as governed by a Constitution and Bylaws established by the membership (based upon Roberts Rules of Order).

Union Meetings

Local 882 Union Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. except in the months of July, August and December. The meetings take place at 4333 Ledger Avenue, Burnaby, in the dispatch hall, located on the ground floor at the rear of the IUOE building. If you're planning to attend a monthly meeting for the first time, please give us a call for more information. There's plenty of free parking.
